Search for abodemoney.com on Trustpilot. An unrelated company on Trustpilot also uses the name Abode, so check that the profile's web address is abodemoney.com before you read the score.

06 · Know your options
How to vet any property tax service, including us
- Read the company's BBB file.
Read the complaints and how the company answered them, not just the grade.1
- Ask how the fee works, and get it in writing.
One flat amount, or a share of your savings? What happens if your value doesn't come down?
- In Texas, check the registration.
Texas law says anyone paid to provide property tax consulting services generally must hold a certificate of registration from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), with exceptions such as Texas-licensed attorneys and CPAs. TDLR's License Data Search shows who is registered.6
- Be wary of anything dressed up as government.
In Texas, a consultant required to register may not use a website address that implies a government site.7 Rules differ by state, so check yours before you file.
- Know that you can do it yourself.
You can file a property tax appeal yourself; hiring a professional is optional. That's how it works in Texas, California, Florida and for homeowners in Cook County, Illinois.8 The Texas form for naming an agent notes that, in some cases, you may want to contact your appraisal district for free information first.9
